I am often told by our homeowners that they seldom use the dining room and aren’t sure if they really need it in their new home but have a formal table, chairs, and Grandmother’s china cabinet, filled with seldom used china, that they must keep for sentimental reasons. Many ask themselves if they are holding on to tradition by keeping a room that is only used a few times a year or intending to eat in there every Sunday, only to end up in the great room, plate on the coffee table, remote control in hand.
There is no reason you can’t have a formal dining room and still find ways to use it more often. In one of our latest designs, The Emerson, we feature a dining room in our model home but offer it to you as a Flex space, one that can fulfill a multitude of uses. It can be a formal dining room, complete with traditional furnishings, just a few steps from the foyer, showcasing heirlooms and collectibles. It can be a library with bookshelves filled with a book lovers collection. It can be a home office, with room for one or two desks, computers and a comfortable chair in front of the window, perfect for surfing the internet. It can be a music room with a grand piano carefully placed to take advantage of the room’s acoustics.
By using rich, deep colors, you can create a sanctuary in your home, away from the busyness of the kitchen and great room but close enough to keep a listening ear on the family. In the dining room featured above, the table surface is metal so it is resistant to damage when using it for games or writing a letter. No longer are you limited to just a formal space that sees little use but by using your imagination, you can personalize this Flex Space for your family.
The Emerson at RiverCreek is featured during The Fredericksburg Area Builders Association Parade of Homes on October 4-5 and October 11-12. The model is located at 81 Brentham Farm Dr., Fredericksburg VA 22405.
