You love the traditions and togetherness of Thanksgiving. Getting to relax and spend time with loved ones. But this year, you’re hosting dinner in your new Atlantic Builders home. Don’t stress out. With your new state-of-the-art kitchen and flexible open floor plan, your first Thanksgiving in your new home will be easy-as-pumpkin pie! Check out these tips for keeping your cool on Thanksgiving Day – and hosting a stress-free dinner!
Plan sooner rather than later. Figure out what’s on the menu, and decide if you’d like your guests to bring something. Accept any and all offers of assistance. If people offer, tell them what you need. Then, figure out where you’re going to put everybody. (Atlantic’s versatile, open floor plans make this part soooo much easier!)
Get organized. Start by making a schedule leading up to dinner. Then, make lists of everything you need to do, along with shopping lists. (Lists let you see everything you need… and checking things off feels sooo good!)
Go shopping. Once you have the menu set, start shopping for non-perishables (e.g. baking ingredients, bread cubes, herbs & spices), and designate a corner of your spacious pantry “Thanksgiving Central”. Closer to the day, head to one of our local farms or markets for a fresh turkey, produce, and home baked goodies!
Clean the house. Make sure the kitchen is clean, the counters are clear, and all necessary equipment is ready. Check that all table linens are cleaned and pressed. Give the house a good going over.
Cook ahead. Don’t stress out trying to cook everything on Thanksgiving Day. Figure out what can be made ahead of time, like casseroles and gravy. Vegetables can be chopped and ready to steam. Some things can’t be cooked early, like the turkey, but almost everything else in the meal can be prepped and ready to just pop on the stovetop or into the oven. Let’s put that new state-of-the-art kitchen to work!
Set up in advance. Establish your dining space. Formal sit-down in the dining room or buffet style in the kitchen/breakfast nook/great room? Drinks and appetizers in the sunroom? Then, set up as much as possible in the days before. That way you won’t be scrambling to find the extra chairs that are somewhere in the garage; cleaning the extra wine glasses that are on that high shelf in the kitchen; and counting the flatware only to discover you don’t have enough right before the first guest arrives.
Offer drinks and snacks before dinner. Set up a bar or drink station in a room other than the kitchen. (Like the sunroom, living room or library.) Make sure it’s stocked with everything so people won’t be traipsing into the kitchen. Tasty appetizers - bowls of nuts, some crackers and cheese, and trays of crudité or hot apps - strategically placed in the living room or lower level rec room will keep them busy munching while you finish up!
Give people something to do. For children – and some adults - it seems like Thanksgiving dinner takes forever to land on the table. Keep ‘em occupied with games out in the yard, and movies or craft projects in the rec room.
Savor the moment. Before your guests arrive, take a deep breath and have a glass of wine. Enjoy the quiet. Once your guests arrive, go with the flow. Remember that people who are always late will be late. People who are picky will be picky. Enjoy yourself – and just let your guests marvel at the incredibly family-friendly design of your new Atlantic Builders home, while you perform culinary magic in your new kitchen!
