There’s a magical step between finding your ideal new home and moving into your ideal new home: picking out the finishing touches.
These are all the bits that go beyond the walls and the floors (though they sometimes hide behind or beneath them).
They add shape, color, and texture, making each room have just the right feel.
A new home’s final touches, the ones you get to choose, are really what make your home yours.
To make sure your home is perfect for you, we’ve created this 5-part guide to choosing new home finishes.
And you can put this guide into practice while visiting our brand-new, 3,500+ sq. ft. Design Studio, opening later this summer. We’re so excited for this new design space, but we’ll have more about that later in this blog post. Keep reading!
1. Figure out your budget
Build your new home finishes budget to be fluid. That is, figure out how much you’d like to spend for each room or feature category, but be mindful that you’ll most likely move your priorities around as you dive into the enjoyable task of figuring out your final list of finishes. Spreadsheets will definitely be your friend during your entire budgeting process.
2. Determine your most desired finishes
Quite often, there are an abundance of finishes and options you can add to your new home. From appliances, to countertops, to backsplashes, to flooring, to lighting, to smart home features, all the ways you can customize your new home are exciting. Once you have your budget set, your next task is to review all the finishes and features available on our online Design Studio—Envision—and determine which are the ones you really want. Creating your wish list on Envision isn’t just building list of words. It’s a fun and interactive experience that guides you through a design checklist (by spaces and features) including a room visualizer to actually see how some of your choices will look in your new home.
3. Prioritize your list of finishes
This is the step where you turn your wish list into your reality list. This is where you rate all your options, determine which finishes are the ones you “would love to have” and which are the ones you “can’t live without,” and reorganize the list based on importance. As you do this, you’ll notice that finishes will change categories and very soon, you’ll have the ideal list of finishes that will really make your home yours. This is an essential step before you go to your in-person Design Studio appointment.
4. Professional Help
Choosing all your new home finishes is an adventure, and it’s good to know we’re always here to make it fun. When you buy an Atlantic Builders’ home, or have one built on your own land, you can enjoy working with the specialists at our Design Studio. Our knowledgeable designers make sure all your finish choices complement each other and stay within your budget.
5. Decide on your final finishes
After your in-person appointment, your Design Studio manager will give you a full list of your selected finishes and the costs. At that time, they will also explain the deadlines for finalizing your selections so your home can remain on schedule. Having a deadline to decide all your final finishes really helps you get the job done. It’s one more exhilarating date in your new home journey; just like closing day and moving day, it is an important step in the process of creating your ideal home.
