One of the joys of a new home is decorating it for the holidays! Maybe you have a fireplace and mantle for the first time, or you finally have a wide front porch that’s just begging for adornments! Here are some tips for taking advantage of the unique features in your new Atlantic Builders home as you decorate for the holidays.
The front door. Nothing says “Christmas” like a fragrant evergreen wreath, but feel free to go for something different on your front door - maybe a wreath made from magnolia leaves in a square or oval shape instead.
The foyer/entryway. Make your visitors feel welcome in seasonal fashion with small live trees (magnolias or evergreens) in the entry or festive displays on the entry table. Fill lanterns with eucalyptus, berries or seasonal potpourri or fill transparent glass or acrylic cylinders with collections of items in similar colors (glass balls, spray painted pine cones, etc).
The stairs. We don’t mean to brag, but our stairways are stunning. And Christmas is the perfect time to highlight them by draping evergreen garland up the banister, anchoring it along the way with bows. An unobtrusive string of mini lights would definitely add some sparkle.
The fireplace mantle. There are so many ways to highlight this lovely feature. Layer lush greenery with pinecones and berry branches for color and texture. Weave in some battery-powered lights or go for something more rustic with tree branches and bark. Hang a wreath above the center of the mantel for the perfect finishing touch.
The family / great room. There’s no doubt that our great rooms are the perfect spot for a Christmas tree and various other holiday decorations. Add instant history to your first Christmas in your new home with vintage ornaments that are full of memories collected by your family. While you may need some new decorations, familiar and beloved ornaments that your family has collected and made over the years add a personalized touch that will act as a great conversation piece during holiday gatherings.
The dining room. There’s something special about a dining room decorated for the holidays, whether for a cozy brunch or a formal dinner. For brunch or lunch, take the classic fruit bowl and give it a holiday twist by layering festive holiday fruits (limes, red holly berries, lemons or oranges) in a glass hurricane vase on the sideboard. Top off the arrangement with seasonal greenery. For an elegant dinner, try red roses surrounded by white tallow berries displayed in silver vases that reflect the warm light from candles, and the rich red of the flowers. Add texture by tucking boxwood and sprigs of berries around the base of the vases.
The outside. Festooning your new home’s exterior for the first time is a lot of fun. Porches with columns that are ideal for garland, a lawn large enough for a lighted reindeer or three, roof eaves just begging for lights. This is your chance to figure out your holiday style. Whether you have a large porch or a compact portico, wreaths, candles, and lights will definitely say “Happy Holidays!” If colorful lights aren’t your cup of tea, beautiful evergreen wreaths secured to your doors and windows using simple ribbons lend an elegant and festive air. Luminaries lined up along the front walkway or down driveway create a bright, twinkling Christmas display that’s simple and affordable.
The mailbox. Spruce up the driveway by turning your mailbox into a festive display. Wrap sheer ribbon loosely around a pine garland and drape the garland around the mailbox. Top off the display with bright berries.
Happy Holidays from Atlantic Builders!
